Here’s an interesting complement to the JSB I’ve been reading:
The Jewish Annotated New Testament, giving a Jewish historical perspective to the writings of the New Testament. As you probably already understand, the NT was written by and tells the story of a group of Jewish individuals living in Jewish communities. We gentiles living in 21st century North America may have a hard time recognizing the meaning behind some of the writings given the vastly divergent perspectives. Marc Zvi Brettler, one of the editors of the JSB, also contributed to this volume, so while I haven’t read any of this yet, I have high hopes that it will be similarly insightful.
