I know I’m a couple days behind on reading now, but I wanted to post this as a follow-on to the bit about the Sabbath: I think 58:3-7 pretty clearly explains what God has in mind for Sabbath. It is not a time for us to afflict others and try to look afflicted ourselves. The Sabbath is meant for us to become more like God. If that means doing something good on the Sabbath, such as healing a person or feeding the poor as Christ did, then so be it. I still don’t think Christ meant for us to completely ignore the Sabbath, but I do believe that the concept of Sabbath is much broader than what the Jewish leaders of the 6th c. BCE saw in it.
